Main Character/Jonathan Joestar

During his childhood, Jonathan was proud and mischievous, yet gentle. Despite already aspiring to be a "true gentleman", Jonathan lacked manners and mostly behaved like a normal child. His mother, having died before he could remember her, and his fellow boys ostracizing him because of his status left Jonathan somewhat lonely. While at first, Jonathan didn't have his future strength of will, Dio unwittingly became the catalyst of his growth by pushing him to the edge and humiliating his girlfriend Erina Pendleton. However, he did have the kindness and courage to immediately jump to Erina's rescue against two bullies bigger than him despite not knowing her.

Regarding Jonathan as a character Araki has stated that Jonathan was difficult for him to design. This is reflected in his goals and character, Jonathan strives to become a "true gentleman." That drive, fueled by his affection to his friends and loved ones, enabled him to overcome the direst situations, notably managing to save his wife Erina when their boat was overcome with zombies and he was fatally wounded.Jonathan fights for what he believes in, and once he is committed to something, he won't back down until the deed is done. He did not so much as flinch as he grasped an assailant's knife within his hand, saying he had much more riding on the fight than merely four fingers.

As a gentleman, Jonathan is also kind and positive. Jonathan has a mindset where he tries to imagine the consequences his actions would have on other people, even if they appear to be enemies. Even after everything Dio has done, Jonathan still considers him his brother, and sheds tears for him. During his life, Jonathan has always had an impulse to save others, beginning with Erina, and ending with his thought of a nearby baby just as he was agonizing from Dio's attack.

Yet Jonathan can feel righteous fury at the evilness of his foes and will conduct justice by vanquishing them. He admitted that his reason for fighting Dio wasn't out of duty for saving the world, but to avenge his loved ones that Dio had killed.

Adolf Hitler

Early Life

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in Braunau am Inn, a small Austrian town near the Austro-German frontier. After his father, Alois, retired as a state customs official, young Adolf spent most of his childhood in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.

Not wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps as a civil servant, he began struggling in secondary school and eventually dropped out. Alois died in 1903, and Adolf pursued his dream of being an artist, though he was rejected from Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts.

After his mother, Klara, died in 1908, Hitler moved to Vienna, where he pieced together a living painting scenery and monuments and selling the images. Lonely, isolated and a voracious reader, Hitler became interested in politics during his years in Vienna, and developed many of the ideas that would shape Nazi ideology.

Military Career of Adolf Hitler

In 1913, Hitler moved to Munich, in the German state of Bavaria. When World War I broke out the following summer, he successfully petitioned the Bavarian king to be allowed to volunteer in a reserve infantry regiment.

Deployed in October 1914 to Belgium, Hitler served throughout the Great War and won two decorations for bravery, including the rare Iron Cross First Class, which he wore to the end of his life.

Hitler was wounded twice during the conflict: He was hit in the leg during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and temporarily blinded by a British gas attack near Ypres in 1918. A month later, he was recuperating in a hospital at Pasewalk, northeast of Berlin, when news arrived of the armistice and Germany’s defeat in World War I.

Like many Germans, Hitler came to believe the country’s devastating defeat could be attributed not to the Allies, but to insufficiently patriotic “traitors” at home—a myth that would undermine the post-war Weimar Republic and set the stage for Hitler’s rise.

Man-made wonders.The Statue of Zeus

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was a giant seated figure, about 12.4 m (41 ft) tall, made by the Greek sculptor Phidiasaround 435  BC at the sanctuary of Olympia, Greece, and erected in the Temple of Zeus there.  Zeus was the sky and thunder god in ancient Greek religion, who ruled as king of the gods of Mount Olympus.

A fanciful reconstruction of Phidias' statue of Zeus, in an engravingmade by Philippe Galle in 1572, from a drawing by Maarten van Heemskerck

The statue was a chryselephantine sculpture of ivory plates and gold panels on a wooden framework. Zeus sat on a painted cedarwood throne ornamented with ebony, ivory, gold and precious stones. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The statue was lost and destroyed during the 5th century AD; details of its form are known only from ancient Greek descriptions and representations on coins.

HistoryEdit

The statue of Zeus was commissioned by the Eleans, custodians of the Olympic Games, in the latter half of the fifth century BC for their newly constructed Temple of Zeus. Seeking to outdo their Athenian rivals, the Eleans employed the renowned sculptor Phidias, who had previously made the massive statue of Athena Parthenos in the Parthenon.

The statue occupied half the width of the aisle of the temple built to house it. "It seems that if Zeus were to stand up," the geographer Strabo noted early in the 1st century BC, "he would unroof the temple." The Zeus was a chryselephantine sculpture, made with ivory and gold panels on a wooden substructure. No copy in marble or bronze has survived, though there are recognizable but only approximate versions on coins of nearby Elis and on Roman coins and engraved gems.

The 2nd-century AD geographer and traveler Pausanias left a detailed description: the statue was crowned with a sculpted wreath of olive sprays and wore a gilded robe made from glass and carved with animals and lilies. Its right hand held a small chryselephantine statue of crowned Nike, goddess of victory; its left a scepter inlaid with many metals, supporting an eagle. The throne featured painted figures and wrought images and was decorated with gold, precious stones, ebony, and ivory. Zeus' golden sandals rested upon a footstool decorated with an Amazonomachy in relief. The passage underneath the throne was restricted by painted screens.

Pausanias also recounts that the statue was kept constantly coated with olive oil to counter the harmful effect on the ivory caused by the "marshiness" of the Altis grove. The floor in front of the image was paved with black tiles and surrounded by a raised rim of marble to contain the oil. This reservoir acted as a reflecting pool which doubled the apparent height of the statue.

According to the Roman historian Livy, the Roman general Aemilius Paullus (the victor over Macedon) saw the statue and "was moved to his soul, as if he had seen the god in person," while the 1st-century AD Greek orator Dio Chrysostom declared that a single glimpse of the statue would make a man forget all his earthly troubles.

Roman Seated Zeus, marble and bronze (restored), following the type established by Phidias (Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg)

According to a legend, when Phidias was asked what inspired him—whether he climbed Mount Olympus to see Zeus, or whether Zeus came down from Olympus so that Phidias could see him—the artist answered that he portrayed Zeus according to Book One, verses 528 – 530 of Homer's Iliad:

He spoke, the son of Cronos, and nodded his head with the dark brows,

and the immortally anointed hair of the great god

swept from his divine head, and all Olympos was shaken.

The sculptor also was reputed to have immortalised Pantarkes, the winner of the boys' wrestling event at the eighty-sixth Olympiad who was said to have been his "beloved" (eromenos), by carving Pantarkes kalos ("Pantarkes is beautiful") into Zeus's little finger, and by placing a relief of the boy crowning himself at the feet of the statue.

According to Pausanias, "when the image was quite finished Pheidias prayed the god to show by a sign whether the work was to his liking. Immediately, runs the legend, a thunderbolt fell on that part of the floor where down to the present day the bronze jar stood to cover the place

While choosing a career don’t let other people tell you what to do

Choosing a profession is one of the most important stages in life. This is a very serious issue that needs to be considered seriously. The choice of your profession can't be trusted to another person. You must make your choice yourself, because I am sure you know much better who and what you want to become. Personally, I don't listen to others over this subject, especially my parents. I think parents do not understand how important it is to trust the choice of their children. I am lucky my parents never insisted me to do something. In conclusion, you are the one, who must decide the path of his life. Don't listen to others.

Summary for English

This year was interesting and eventful, we had two English teachers this year, and we were very lucky that they were both very good, in terms of working with us, making contact with us, and in terms of knowledge. Since I studied English with a tutor, I already knew a lot, but even so I learned a lot, remembered the old and scribbled my knowledge,This year I participated in a lot of projects, designing it is not just a feature of our school, it is done for our glorious stock and studying for example new phrases.

There is no need to write much here, I just want to thank Mrs. Elena and Mrs. Anzhela.

In the Pride Lands of Africa, a pride of lions rule over the animal kingdom from Pride Rock. King Mufasa's and Queen Sarabi's newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki the mandrill, the kingdom's shaman and advisor. Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and is angered by the birth of the new prince. This is the subject of an argument with first Mufasa's majordomo, the hornbill Zazu, then Mufasa himelf.

A few years later, Mufasa shows a young Simba the Pride Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the "circle of life", which connects all living things. Meanwhile, Scar plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba, so he may become king. He tricks Simba and his best friend Nala (to whom Simba is betrothed) into exploring a forbidden elephants' graveyard by tricking Zazu. However, the cubs are soon attacked by three spotted hyenas, Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, who are in league with Scar. Mufasa intervenes and rescues the cubs. Though upset with Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba.

Scar sets a trap for his brother and nephew, luring Simba into a gorge and having the hyenas drive a large herd of wildebeest into a stampede that will trample him. Scar himself does not interfere to save Simba, but instead informs Mufasa of Simba's peril, knowing that the king will rush to save his son. Mufasa saves Simba but ends up hanging perilously from the gorge's edge. Scar refuses to help Mufasa, instead, sending him falling to his death. He then convinces Simba that the tragedy was Simba's own fault and advises him to leave the kingdom and never return. He orders the hyenas to kill the cub, but Simba escapes. Scar tells the pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in the stampede and steps forward as the new king, allowing his three hyena minions and the rest of their large pack to live in the Pride Lands.

Simba collapses in a desert and is rescued by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog, who are fellow outcasts and chase away the vultures. Simba grows up in the jungle with his two new friends, living a carefree life under the motto "hakuna matata" ("no worries" in Swahili). Now a young adult, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who turns out to be Nala. She and Simba reunite and fall in love, and she urges him to return home, telling him that Pride Lands have become a drought-stricken wasteland under Scar's reign. Feeling guilty over his father's death, Simba refuses and storms off. He then encounters Rafiki, who tells him that Mufasa's spirit lives on in Simba. Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must take his rightful place as king. Realizing that he can no longer run from his past, Simba decides to return to the Pride Lands.

Aided by his friends, Simba sneaks past the hyenas at Pride Rock and confronts Scar, who had just struck Sarabi. Scar taunts Simba over his role in Mufasa's death and backs him to the edge of the rock, where he reveals to him that he murdered Mufasa. Enraged, Simba pins Scar to the ground and forces him to reveal the truth to the rest of the pride. Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the lionesses fend off the hyenas while Scar, attempting to escape, is cornered by Simba at the top of Pride Rock. Scar begs for mercy and attempts to blame the hyenas for his actions; Simba spares his life but orders him to leave the Pride Lands forever. Scar attacks his nephew, but Simba manages to toss him from the top of the rock. Scar survives the fall but is attacked and killed by the hyenas, who overheard his attempt to betray them. Afterward, Simba takes over the kingship as rain begins to fall. He also makes Nala his queen.

Later, with Pride Rock restored to its usual state, Rafiki presents Simba and Nala's newborn cub to the assembled animals, continuing the circle of life.

«Thanksgiving»

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated predominantly in North America, and it possesses a different meaning in each of the countries where it’s acknowledged. In the United States, Thanksgiving is a federal holiday (meaning all government employees and most private employees are given a day off of work), and always takes places on the Fourth Thursday in November, regardless of the date. The holiday signifies the immense progress made by pilgrims, or some of the first travelers to North America, at Plymouth Plantation circa 1621. It was at this time that the hungry and weary Pilgrims were taught (by Native Americans) how to grow and produce food on North America’s unique terrain. Once they’d grown (and caught) an abundance of food, the Pilgrims were expectedly thankful, and they celebrated alongside the Native Americans who provided them with such valuable assistance. President Abraham Lincoln initiated the contemporary practice of Thanksgiving by calling for a «day of Thanksgiving» during one of his Civil War addresses. In America today, Thanksgiving remains firmly engrained in its historical roots, and is widely considered to be a day for giving thanks for good food, good times, and family. Thanksgiving dinner generally consists of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, gravy, and ample desserts.

Theodore Roosevelt was governor of New York before becoming U.S. vice president. At age 42, Roosevelt became the youngest man to assume the U.S. presidency after President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901. He won a second term in 1904. Known for his anti-monopoly policies and ecological conservationism, Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize for his part in ending the Russo-Japanese War.

Early Life

Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, to Theodore "Thee" Roosevelt Sr., of Dutch heritage, and Martha "Mittie" Bulloch, a Southern belle rumored to have been a prototype for the Gone with the Wind character Scarlett O'Hara. His family owned a successful plate-glass import business.

As a young boy, Roosevelt — or "Teedie," as he was known to his family members (he wasn't fond of the nickname "Teddy") — spent a lot of time inside his family's handsome brownstone, homeschooled due to his illnesses and asthma. This gave him the opportunity to nurse his passion for animal life, but by his teens, with the encouragement of his father, whom he revered, Roosevelt developed a rigorous physical routine that included weightlifting and boxing.

When his father died during his second year at Harvard College, Roosevelt channeled his grief into working even harder. After graduating magna cum laude in 1880, he enrolled at Columbia Law School and got married to Alice Hathaway Lee of Massachusetts.

Interesting Facts About Armenia

1. Armenia is an ancient country

Armenia, along with Iran, China, Greece, Egypt and Japan, is among the 6 ancient countries that have survived for thousands of years. Armenia was first mentioned in king Dari I’s Behistun manuscript in 520 BC. Armenia was also mentioned in ancient Greek authors Herodotus and Xenophon in the V century BC.

2. First country to adopt Christianity

Armenia is the first country to adopt Christianity as state religion. Jesus Christ’s apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew preached in Armenia and Armenian Apostolic Church is named after them. Gregory the Illuminator (Lusavorich), who baptized Armenia in 301, became the first Catholicos of All Armenians. Armenia became the first Christian state.

3. The first church in the world was built in Armenia

Echmiadzin Cathedral was the first official church, built in the IV century. First Catholicos Gregory the Illuminator (Lusvorich) dreamed that Christ came down from the sky with a fiery hammer in the hand and pointed out the place to build a church. In the year 303 in that place, where at the time was an ancient pagan temple, the church was founded, named Echmiadzin.

Christ’s Spear (Spear of Longinus), which the Roman soldier Longinus thrust in Jesus Christ, is kept in the treasury of the Echmiadzin Cathedral. Since 2000, the cathedral is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage.

4. Yerevan is one of the oldest cities in the world

Yerevan, the 13th capital city of Armenia, one of the oldest cities in the world, is located in the north-eastern part of the Ararat Valley. It was founded in 782 BC by King Argishti I. Yerevan is 29 years older than Rome. In 2018 Yerevan will celebrate its 2800 anniversary.

5. The Armenian alphabet is one of the most advanced in the world

The Armenian alphabet was created in 405-406 AD by a scholar and monk Mesrop Mashtots. The key to creating the Armenian alphabet served the ancient Armenian language, consisting of 28 letters, which absolutely didn’t correspond to the sounds of the Armenian language. Mashtots’ alphabet consists of 36 letters. 7 letters convey vowel sounds and 29 letters - consonants. After the XII century 2 more letters appeared in the alphabet, and in 1940 through the merger of existing two letters another letter appeared in the alphabet, but it has no title. Scientists consider the Armenian alphabet one of the three most advanced in the world, along with Georgian and Korean alphabets.

Mesrop Mashtots is also the creator of the Georgian and Albanian alphabets. More than one thousand six hundred years the Armenian alphabet exists almost unchanged. The monument to the Armenian alphabet and its creator Mesrop Mashtots is in the village of Artashavan, on the slope of Mount Aragats.

Matenadaran is also the world's largest repository of ancient Armenian manuscripts.

7. Armenia is the homeland of apricot

Armenia is considered to be the homeland of apricot. This is due to the history of the penetration of apricot from Asia to Europe. The famous French biologist De Poerderle (fr. De Poerderlé) in the XVIII century, wrote: "The name of this tree comes from Armenian, Asian province, where it appeared and from where it was brought to Europe ..."

Previously it was thought that in the XIX century, the apricot was imported from Armenia to Greece by Alexander the Great, and then from Greece to Italy. This version was not confirmed by the Roman and Greek inscriptions of the time: apricot is not mention there.

However, apricot is mentioned in the sources of the I century, which gives evidence that the apricot was in Italy in the I century BC, after the Roman-Parthian Wars. Apricot was called "Armenian apple" (lat. Mela armeniaca, lat. pomum armeniacum), which confirms the theory that the apricot was brought to Rome from Armenia. Arab geographer Ibn al-Faqih in his "Book of Countries" (903) mentions the Armenian apricot under its Armenian name “tsiran” and calls it "the fruit of Armenia."

Famous Armenian musical instrument "duduk" is made of apricot wood.

8. Biblical mountain Ararat

Ararat Mountain range consists of two extinct volcanoes: Great Ararat (in Armenian Masis, 5165 m) and Small Ararat (in Armenian Sis, 3927 m).

However, at present, the mountain is not in Armenia. It is in the territory of modern Turkey. It was moved to Turkey in 1921 by the Treaty of Kars. The modern Republic of Armenia doesn’t recognize the Treaty of Kars.

9. Armenian Genocide

Armenian Genocide - Armenian massacres organized and implemented by the authorities of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and lasted until 1923. The genocide was carried out by means of physical destruction and deportation, including the displacement of the civilian population in the conditions that lead to certain death. In 1907 in Turkey the power was taken by the Young Turks, who had the ideology of pan-Turkism, or the dream of a "Great Turan" from the Balkans to the Altai. Turkey's entry into the First World War in 1914 gave the Young Turks the opportunity for a final decision of "the Armenian issue", that is, the complete extermination of the Armenians.

"Who now remembers the extermination of the Armenians?" - asked Adolf Hitler, thus motivating the German attack on Poland and planning the Holocaust.

About 1,500.00 Armenians were violently killed. Armenian Genocide is recognized and condemned by 26 countries. This event was 100 years old on April 24, 2015.

10. The Armenian Diaspora

The total number of Armenians in the world is 10-12 million, whereas the population of Armenia is around 3 million.

After the 1915 genocide nearly 500,000 Armenians were scattered around the world and Armenian Diaspora greatly increased. Armenian refugees from Turkey settled in many cities of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East. It has been perfectly preserved thanks to the special microclimate, and that it was under a thick layer of sheep excrement, which acted as a hard protective shell. The shoe was of 37-th size and was filled with straw and grass. It was worn on the right foot, and it was made from a single piece of leather. Also the shoelaces and holes with 2-3 mm in diameter meant for the shoelaces have been preserved.

14. Armenian Brandy (cognac)

Armenian brandy - a well-known drink to all of us, respected around the world. Industrial production of cognac began in 1887. The merchant Nerses Tairyan built the first winery in Yerevan. 12 years later it was bought by a Russian merchant Nikolai Shustov from Moscow. A few years later Shustov cognac became popular not only in Russia but also abroad. In 1900 Shustov incognito sent samples of brandy to an exhibition in Paris. The Jury unanimously awarded the Grand Prix to the unknown winemaker. Learning that the birthplace of the drink was Armenia, the French allowed Shustov (as an exception) to write on the bottles the word "cognac" instead of "brandy" as all foreign manufacturers of such products were instructed to do.

Russian Emperor Nicholas II, who tried Shustov's brandy at a testing competition in 1912, gave him the right to be the main supplier of this drink at Russian imperial court.

We also know that cognac was Winston Churchill’s favorite alcoholic drink. Every day he drank a bottle of 50-degree Armenian brandy Dvin.

THE WALT DISNEY

Walter Elias Disney was an American entrepreneur, animator, voice actor and film producer. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, Disney holds the record for most Academy Awards earned by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations. He was presented with two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards and an Emmy Award, among other honors. Several of his films are included in the National Film Registry by the .

Born in Chicago in 1901, Disney developed an early interest in drawing. He took art classes as a boy and got a job as a commercial illustrator at the age of 18. He moved to California in the early 1920s and set up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy. With Ub Iwerks, Walt developed the character Mickey Mouse in 1928, his first highly popular success; he also provided the voice for his creation in the early years. As the studio grew, Disney became more adventurous, introducing synchronized sound, full-color three-strip Technicolor, feature-length cartoons and technical developments in cameras. The results, seen in features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs(1937), Pinocchio, Fantasia (both 1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942), furthered the development of animated film. New animated and live-action films followed after World War II, including the critically successful Cinderella (1950) and Mary Poppins(1964), the latter of which received five Academy Awards.

In the 1950s, Disney expanded into the amusement park industry, and in 1955 he opened Disneyland. To fund the project he diversified into television programs, such as Walt Disney's Disneyland and The Mickey Mouse Club; he was also involved in planning the 1959 Moscow Fair, the 1960 Winter Olympics, and the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 1965, he began development of another theme park, Disney World, the heart of which was to be a new type of city, the "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow" (EPCOT). Disney was a heavy smoker throughout his life, and died of lung cancer in December 1966 before either the park or the EPCOT project were completed.

Disney was a shy, self-deprecating and insecure man in private but adopted a warm and outgoing public persona. He had high standards and high expectations of those with whom he worked. Although there have been accusations that he was racist or anti-Semitic, they have been contradicted by many who knew him. His reputation changed in the years after his death, from a purveyor of homely patriotic values to a representative of American imperialism. He nevertheless remains an important figure in the history of animation and in the cultural history of the United States, where he is considered a national cultural icon. His film work continues to be shown and adapted; his namesake studio and company maintains high standards in its production of popular entertainment, and the Disney amusement parks have grown in size and number to attract visitors in several countries.

Newlyweds often jump over a fire

Armenian holidays consist of Christian culture, which are both deeply rooted in Armenian customs and traditions. As people couldn’t forget all their favorite celebrations, the Armenian Apostolic Church has adopted some of the traditions and holidays. For example, during the holiday Trndez, newlyweds jump over an open fire to defend themselves against misfortune and evil.

The Lion

The Needle Tree

He even went on to say that there were witnesses who would vouch for his words. Hearing the man boast so much, a smart bystander said, “Oh good man, we do not need any witnesses to believe your words. Imagine this place to be Rhodes and leap for us”.

The lying traveler didn’t know what to do and went away quietly.

The Miser And His Gold

Paper Menagerie

Jack’s mother can make paper animals come to life. In the beginning, Jack loves them and spends hours with his mom. But as soon as he grows up he stops talking to her since she is unable to converse in English.

When his mother tries to talk to him through her creations, he kills them and collects them in a box. After a tragic loss, he finally gets to know her story through a hidden message which he should have read a long time ago.

What Is Great About It: The story is a simple narration that touches on complex issues. It is about leaving your own country with the promise of a better life.

It is also about the conflicts that can occur between families when different cultures and languages collide. In this case, the tension is so high that it destroys the bond between a mother and her son. It also has a moving message about never taking your loved ones for granted.

 There Will Come Soft Rains

Hovhannes Tumanyan

Hovhannes Tumanyan was born on February 19, 1869 in the village of Dsegh, Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire (now in Lori Province, Armenia).

His father, Aslan (1839–1898), was the village priest known by the name Ter-Tadevos. He was an offspring of an Armenian princely family of Tumanyan, branch of the famous royal house of Mamikonian that settled in Lori in 10th–11th centuries from their original feudal fief of Taron.

His mother, Sona (1842–1936), was an avid storyteller with a particular interest in fables. Young Tumanyan was the oldest of eight children; his siblings were Rostom (1871–1915), Osan (1874–1926), Iskuhi (1878–1943), Vahan (1881–1937), Astghik (1885–1953), Arshavir (1888–1921), Artashes (1892–1916).

From 1877–1879, Tumanyan attended the parochial school of Dsegh. From 1879–1883 he went to a school in Jalaloghly. Tumanyan moved to Tiflis in 1883, where he attended the Nersisyan School from 1883–1887. Tumanyan's wrote his first poem at the age of 12, while studying in Jalaloghly school. He lived at the teacher's house for a while and fell in love with the teacher's daughter Vergine. Since 1893, Tumanyan worked for Aghbyur, Murtch, Hasker and Horizon periodicals and also was engaged in public activism.

In 1899, Tumanyan came up with an idea of organizing meetings of Armenian intellectuals of the time at his house on 44 Bebutov Street in Tiflis (present-day Amaghleba 18, in Sololaki). Soon it became an influential literary group, which often gathered in the garret of Tumanyan's house. Vernatun means garret in Armenian, which was the name the group was referred to. Prominent members of the collective were Avetik Isahakyan, Derenik Demirchyan, Levon Shant, Ghazaros Aghayan, Perch Proshyan, Nikol Aghbalian, Alexander Shirvanzade, Nar-Dos, Vrtanes Papazyan, Vahan Terian, Leo, Stepan Lisitsyan, Mariam Tumanyan, Gevorg Bashinjagyan and many other significant Armenian figures of early 20th century. With some pauses, it existed until 1908.

In 1912 Tumanyan was elected the president of the Company of Caucasus Armenian Writers.

In the fall of 1921, Tumanyan went to Constantinople to find support of Armenian refugees. After months spent there, he returned ill. After surgery in 1922, he started to get better. But in September, Tumanyan's disease started to progress again. He was transferred to a hospital in Moscow, where he died on March 23, 1923

The Legend of Christmas tree

Two little children were sitting by the fire one cold winter’s night. All at once they heard a timid knock at

the door, and one ran to open it.

There, outside in the cold and the darkness, stood a child with no shoes upon his feet and clad in thin,

ragged garments. He was shivering with cold, and he asked to come in and warm himself.

«Yes, come,» cried both the children; «you shall have our place by the fire. Come in!»

They drew the little stranger to their warm seat and shared their supper with him, and gave him their

bed, while they slept on a hard bench.

In the night they were awakened by strains of sweet music and, looking out, they saw a band of children

in shining garments approaching the house. They were playing on golden harps, and the air was full of

melody.

Suddenly the Stranger Child stood before them; no longer cold and ragged, but clad in silvery light.

His soft voice said: «I was cold and you took Me in. I was hungry, and you fed Me. I was tired, and you

gave Me your bed. I am the Christ Child, wandering through the world to bring peace and happiness to

all good children. As you have given to Me, so may this tree every year give rich fruit to you.»

So saying, He broke a branch from the fir tree that grew near the door, and He planted it in the ground

and disappeared. But the branch grew into a great tree, and every year it bore wonderful golden fruit for

the kind children.

Christmas Legends

The legends of Christmas are more than just amusing and entertaining; they either convey a strong message or teach us an important lesson of life. Both ways, they tell us about certain simple yet significant values of life. Children especially, are immensely benefitted through these tales. The fun and entertaining parts are capable of grabbing the attention of the children, thereby conferring upon them the ethics or morals which these legends hold.

Almost every Christmas tradition has a legend behind it. In fact, it will not be wrong to say that most of the legends have become traditions. Christmas tree, for instance, is often associated with the legend of thunder oak. The story narrates how the evergreen fir tree replaced the thunder oak (Thor's Tree) and was chosen as Christmas tree. The legend of Santa Claus is perhaps the most popular of all the legends. Every child awaits the arrival of Santa on Christmas, with much eagerness. In some places, children hang their stockings and in others, gifts are inconspicuously placed beneath the Christmas tree. Santa Claus's origin has often been associated with Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra in the 4th century. With so many traditions related with Christmas, there is bound to be a large number of legends as well. To observe all the traditions religiously is important, but more important is to understand the principles on which they are constructed, which is their very purpose.

Legend Of Santa Claus

Origin

The story of Santa Clause traces back to Saint Nicholas and his kind deeds in his city. Nicholas is believed to have been born to a wealthy Christian family in Myra, which is now in modern Turkey. He was a very kind person and his kindness and benevolence made him so popular that he soon became the Bishop of Myra. To ensure that the town folk were happy, he used to travel at night, listening to his people's stories. During one such visit, he passed by a poor family's house and overheard the conversation between the family members. They were complaining about their misfortunes and were planning to sell all three of their daughters as slaves or prostitutes. Nicholas could not stand their plight and threw three purses of gold, enough to get all three of their daughters married. It is believed that he threw this money through the chimney of their house.

Santa Claus In Media

By the 20th century, Santa Claus had become so popular that this particular character was being used by beverage companies to 'up' their sales during Christmas. Apart from cola companies, many charity organizations made their volunteers dress up as Santa Claus to raise fund to help the poor during Christmas. It was in 1937 that an American actor, by the name Charles W Howard, represented Santa Claus in departmental stores and parades by dressing up like the character.

Of late, there are many comic strips, advertisements, TV commercials that depict Santa Claus as a jolly character and also portray his mischievous side-kicks (elves) playing pranks at the toy factory.

Traditions
The chimney tradition is one of the most popular traditions associated with Santa Claus. History has it that Saint Nicholas popularly known as Santa Claus tossed coins through a window and when the window was locked, he tossed them through the chimney. Jan Steen's painting "The Fest of Saint Nicholas" depicted some children and adults looking up the chimney while the other children played with their toys. The whole chimney tradition was popularized by Moore's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas", where Moore described Santa Claus as a joyous elf.

'Letters to Santa' is another popular tradition followed by many children all over the world. Children write a wish list, which usually contains various toys that they would want to own and play with. In fact, Canada has a special postal code i.e., Santa Claus, North Pole, Canada, H0H 0H0.

Santa Claus is one of the most important characters during Christmas who has many legends associated with him. He is a legendary Christmas character who has evolved through time and has become an integral part of Christmas, thus, adding more joy to the festival.

Breaking Dishes On Neighbor’s Door  – Denmark

A strange and weird Danish New Year tradition is throwing breakable dishes at neighbor’s door. Strangely this makes them happy instead of annoying them. The family with the most huge tower of broken plates, glasses, cups and other crockery is considered to be the most lucky one because it means that they have lots of loyal friends.

Talking to Spirits – Mexico

Talking to spirits is a part of Mexican belief. Mexicans strongly believe that they can communicate with the souls of their dead loved ones. New Year eve is considered the best time to communicate with the dead spirits to convey a message or ask for guidance. And this is not done at home on individuals basis but is practiced legally. Taos Inn, in New Mexico, e.g. offers 15 minutes session of spiritualism and meditation in $15. Mexicans also celebrate a day, “Day of the Dead” annually on the 2nd of November.

Great Balls of Fire – Scotland

A dangerous Scottish festival around the New Year is the festival of Hogmanay. The Hogmanay Festival is a New Year celebration with a dash of Scottish flair. This festival takes place on the 31st of December every year. Men parade through the streets holding blazing balls of fire. They continuously swing these balls over their heads.  According the the locals, the balls of fire bring purification and sunshine. This celebration dates back as far as the Vikings.

Wearing Polka Dots – Philippines

Imagine streets full of people wearing polka dots and dinning table full of round shaped food and fruits on one single day of the year. This all actually happens in Philippine on the New Year eve every year. Philippines believe that this will bring them prosperity by associating the round dots to coins and wealth.

Hovhannes Tumanyan (Armenian: Հովհաննես Թումանյան, classical spelling: Յովհաննէս Թումանեան) (February 19 [O.S. February 7] 1869 – March 23, 1923) was an Armenian poet, writer, translator, literary and public activist. He is considered the national poet of Armenia.[1]

Tumanyan wrote poems, quatrains, ballads, novels, fables, critical and journalistic articles.[2] His work was mostly written in realistic form, often centering on everyday life of his time.[1] Born in the historical village of Dsegh in the Lori region, at a young age Tumanyan moved to Tiflis, which was the center of Armenian culture under the Russian Empire during the 19th and early 20th centuries.[3] He soon became known to the wide Armenian society for his simple but very poetic works.

Many films and animated films have been adapted from Tumanyan's works. Two operas: Anush (1912) by Armen Tigranian and Almast (1930) by Alexander Spendiaryan, were written based on his works.

Terian was born in the Gandza village (განძანი) of Javakheti region of Georgia (then in Russian Empire). Schooled in Tiflis, he then studied at the Lazarian College in Moscow, where he was exposed to symbolism and joined the Russian Social Democrats. He was jailed by Czarist police for his political activity. He is mostly known for his poems dedicated to autumn and love. That's why Teryan is known as "Singer of Autumn" in Literature. He published his first book of poems, "Dreams at Dusk", in 1908, which made him an immediate sensation, Hovhannes Tumanian calling him the most original lyric poet of his age. He later published "Night Remembrance", "The Golden Legend", "The Return", "The Golden Link", "In the Land of Nairi" (where he substitute the word 'Nairi' for each instance where the word 'Armenia' would have suited), and "The Cat's Paradise". His poems are filled with images of rain, mist, pallid fields and shapeless shadows, symbols of sorrow, despair and eventually, peace.

Alice opened the door and found that it led into a small passage, not much larger than a rat-hole: she knelt down and looked along the passage into the loveliest garden you ever saw. How she longed to get out of that dark hall, and wander about among those beds of bright flowers and those cool fountains, but she could not even get her head though the doorway; `and even if my head would go through,’ thought poor Alice, `it would be of very little use without my shoulders. Oh, how I wish I could shut up like a telescope! I think I could, if I only know how to begin.’ For, you see, so many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.

There seemed to be no use in waiting by the little door, so she went back to the table, half hoping she might find another key on it, or at any rate a book of rules for shutting people up like telescopes: this time she found a little bottle on it, (`which certainly was not here before,’ said Alice,) and round the neck of the bottle was a paper label, with the words `Drink Me’ beautifully printed on it in large letters.

Komitas

Soghomon Soghomonian, ordained and commonly known as Komitas, (Armenian September 1869 – 22 October 1935) was an Armenian priest, musicologist, composer, arranger, singer, and choirmaster,He collected and transcribed over 3,000 pieces of Armenian folk music, more than half of which were subsequently lost and only around 1,200 are now extant.

The palace of ice cream

Once, in Bologna, it was made a palace of ice cream right on the Piazza Maggiore, and the children came from far away to give him a lick. The roof was of whipped cream, the smoke from the chimneys of cotton candy, candied fruit chimneys. Everything else was ice cream: the doors of ice cream, ice cream walls, the furniture of ice cream. A small child was attached to a table and licked his paws one by one, until he collapsed on the table with all the dishes, and the dishes were of chocolate ice cream, the most good. A guard of the city, at one point, he noticed that a window was melting. The glass was of strawberry ice cream, and pink squagliavano in rivulets. – Soon, – cried the guard, – the earliest yet! And all down to lick soon as possible, so as not to let go lost a single drop of that masterpiece.

- A chair! – Begged for an old lady, who could not make his way through the crowd – a chair for a poor old woman. Who can bring me one? With armrests, if you can. A generous firefighter ran to fetch a chair and pistachio ice cream, and the poor old lady, all blessed, he began to lick her own armrests. It was a great day, that, and to order any of the doctors had a stomach ache. Even now, when the kids ask for another ice cream, parents sigh:

- Yeah, for you it would take a whole building, like that of Bologna.

A baby asked God, “They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?”

“Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”

The child further inquired, “But tell me, here in heaven I don’t have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.”

God said, “Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel’s love and be very happy.”

Again the child asked, “And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don’t know the language?”

God said, “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.”

“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”

God said, “Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.”

“Who will protect me?”

God said, “Your angel will defend you even if it means risking it’s life.”

“But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.”

God said, “Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you.”

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, “God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel’s name.”

“You will simply call her, ‘Mom.’”

Caught in a tree

part 1

“One day I was in aforest, All day I hunted and got nothing. In the evening I came to the Mississippi. I said to myself: “It is late, I must go home”, but then I thought: “My wife is hungry  and she has no money. I must stay here till morning”. I saw a big tree and stopped under it. I was very tired. I lay down and was asleep. At 4 o’clock in the mornng a terrible noise awoke me. I looked up and high up the tree I saw a big nest with two young eagles in it. I remembered the Eanglish gentleman in New Orleans who wanted a pair of young eagles for the London Zoo.  He could pay good money. I said to myself: “I shall get up into that tree and get these young eagles.” In twօ minutes I was up in the tree, but It was very difficult to get to the nest. When at last I got there and could look into the nest, I saw the young eagles and also some food for them-meat and fish. The old birds were not there. When I tried to take the youn eagles out of the nest. Suddenly I felt a terrible pain in the back of my head. I looked round and saw the mother eagle. And she was ready to make a second attack.  “It will be better to get down”, I thought and got down onto a lower branch. Here I set and rested. Suddenly I heard a terrible noisefrom below me. I looked and saw water all around me. There were many big trees between me and the river and now they all fell down one after onother into the water. But my tree stood in the water and shook. I understood what it was: a flood of Mississippi. “What could I do? I cannot swim, so I could only sit where I was.All night I waited for help. In the morning I saw a boat on the river, I cried “Help, help”. But they didn’t hear me. Later a second boat passed, then third, then fourth. Every time I cried out, but they didn’t hear me. And so passed my first day on the tree and I was very hungry.

“I remembered that there was some meat and fish in the eagle’s nest. And so I went up to the nest again. The birds attacked me, but I had to fight with them, I got some fish and ate it. Now I was not hungty. But soon I wanted to drink. That was terrible. There was water so near and I couldn’t get it. So I took off my shirt and tied a string to it. I let my shirt fall into the water below. When I got it out, it was fulll of water andcould drink.I lived six long days in the tree. Every day I got up to the nest and found some food there. But I couldn’t stay in the tree all my life, and began to make a plan. I was not afraid of eagels now, we were good friends, they saw that I did nothing bad to the young birds. I knew that eagles have very strong wings, they could carry me over the water to dry land. And I could help them a little, if I moved my arms and legs in the water. So I decided to catch the two old eagles. It was difficult but I did it after some time. Then I took my string and tied four legs together. After this I tied myself to the same string. Then I jumped into the water. My plan was good: The two eagles carried me through the branches down. I was in the water. Now the birds began to beat the water with their wings. I moved my arms and legs and helped them as much as I could. They went to the other side of the river. Very soon I was on dry land.” “And what did you do with their eagles” Did you let them go?” I asked Zeb.

” Of course not, I sold them to the Englishman and got good money for them”, said Zeb.

What will our life be like two hundred years from now?

In the future I would not be, at home would fly, people would fly to school in a helicopter, place phones would be hours,The child could walk and talk at three months,When the children will be one year old, he would know everything that needs to be taught in school,Armenia will not, people would eat the stems,People would not have books,Then there would be magic,Then people could throw fireballs,People would live on Mars, People would sleep in the morning and at night would share their work.
